About the Mesa Pilot
Development Program

"Learn to fly with us, then fly for us"

Mesa Air Group and its collegiate partner, San Juan College offer a unique approach to becoming an airline pilot. The Aviation Degree Program was established in 1989 for the sole purpose of grooming First Officers for the company. In this way, Mesa can train pilots to its high standards. Beech Bonanza at the Four Corners AirportThe airline knows who the pilots are and the quality of training they have received. Mesa's new pilots have already been trained in complex aircraft and make the transition well to the jets after having gone through jet systems and the CRJ-FTD.

This training takes pilots with no time or very low time through private, instrument, commercial, and multi-engine certificates and 40 hours in the jet FTD in only 17 months! The difference is being specifically to trained for Mesa, using checklists, callouts, and standards that mirror the company's own operating manual.

  • As a Part 141 school, San Juan College's program meets rigid FAA requirements for pilot training
  • All training is geared to meet Mesa Air Group's hiring standards
  • Upon completion of the program, successful graduates go through the Mesa hiring process. Those who are hired then go directly into the right seat as First Officers. Average flight time at the point of hire is 250 hours!
  • Since 9/11, typical upgrade time from First Officer to Captain is three years.
  • Today's graduates could fly any one of Mesa's aircraft: the Dash 8/200 series, CRJs, or ERJs. The possibilities are exciting!
  • Flight Costs will run about $50,000 to $55,000. Financial aid is available.
