Course Descriptions
(Specific Aviation Requirements)

AVIA 120 COMMERCIAL GROUND SCHOOL. Basic study of meteorology, navigation, theory of flight, use of radar, the study of the aircraft power plant, and general service of the aircraft. Corequisite: AVIA 145.

AVIA 135 AIRLINE OPERATIONS. This course will provide a basic understanding of the airline industry. Focus will be placed on management functions and organization, as well as the structure and economics of the airlines, both domestic and international. Additional topics, including Crew Resource Management, Mesa Air Group's policies and operations, will be discussed. Instructor will assign projects and facilitate class discussions to help students gain additional knowledge for future employment in aviation. Each semester the instructor may bring in guest speaker(s) from the airline industry to give students first-hand knowledge of industry changes and trends.

AVIA 145 PRIVATE FLIGHT TRAINING. Private Flight Training is a planned instructional course designed to prepare the student for his/her federal Private Pilot flight exam. The student will receive instruction from a certified flight instructor and will have solo time. The course involves pre-briefing, actual flight, and debriefing sessions. The student's performance will be evaluated by a certified flight instructor.

AVIA 150 AIRCRAFT MECHANICAL OPERATION. Familiarization of the specific aircraft used for flight training in both the Primary and PACE programs.. Also included will be an overview of all aircraft operating locally by commercial flight and passenger carriers.

AVIA 160 INSTRUMENT GROUND SCHOOL. Instrument flying principles acquainting the student with the theory and logic that pertain to instrument flight. Course content includes weather interpretation, air traffic control procedures, and instrument flying procedures. Prerequisite: AVIA 120.

AVIA 165. ADVANCED INSTRUMENT GROUND SCHOOL. An intensive review of of instrument procedures, techniques, and regulations with emphasis on Mesa Air Group's requirements will be covered. Course content will include Jeppesen approach and enroute charts, B-58 Baron aircraft instruments and interpretation, and proper communications procedures with air traffic control. This course is primarily for PACE pilots and serves as a refresher course.

AVIA 170 INSTRUMENT FLIGHT I. Instrument Flight I is a planned instructional course designed to prepare the student, in coordination with AVIA 190, to take and pass the FAA Instrument Pilot Flight Examination. Additional requirements will be completed in Instrument Flight II. The course involves pre-briefing, actual flight, and de-briefing sessions. The student's performance will be evaluated by a certified flight instructor. Prerequisites: AVIA 145; Corequisite: AVIA 160.

AVIATION 190 INSTRUMENT FLIGHT II. This course is designed to complete the flight work required for the pilot to receive his FAA Instrument certificate. This course is primarily designed to allow the pilot to build solo, instrument, and cross-country flight time. Some dual flight time will be required. Prerequisites: AVIA 170; Corequisite 220.

AVIA 220 ADVANCED COMMERCIAL GROUND SCHOOL. Basic study of F.A.R. governing operations, privileges, and limitations of a commercial pilot, to include accident reporting requirements of the NTSB, basic aerodynamics, and principles of flight, plus specific airplane operations, including use of flaps, retractable landing gear, controllable propellers, high altitude operations, and load, balance computations, and aircraft performance charts. Additionally, a detailed study of the Federal Aviation Regulations as they apply to regional airlines will be undertaken. Prerequisite: AVIA 160; Corequisite: AVIA 190.

AVIA 230 COMMERCIAL/MULTI-ENGINE FLIGHT TRAINING. This course is a planned instructional course designed to prepare the pilot for his/her FAA Commercial Pilot Flight Examination and Multi-Engine Flight examination. The pilot will receive instruction from a certified flight instructor and will have solo time. The course involves pre-briefing, actual flight, and de-briefing sessions. The pilot's performancee will be evaluated by the flight instructor. Prerequisite: AVIA 190. Corequisite: AVIA 240.

AVIA 240 MULTI-ENGINE GROUND SCHOOL. Familiarization with the light twin engine aircraft and with jet aircraft used by Mesa Air Group. Prerequisite: AVIA 220 or enrolled in PACE. Corequisite: AVIA 230.

AVIA 266 METEOROLOGY FOR PILOTS. Basic study of meteorology which includes the earth's atmosphere and the elements that affect it, air masses, air mass modification, in-flight weather hazards, aviation weather reports, and weather forecasts.

AVIA 267 CANADAIR REGIONAL JET SYSTEMS. Introduces students to advanced glass technology and the automated flight deck. Aviation students will complete their final semester of training with 40 hours in the Ascent® Jet flight training device. The technology covered will include Flight Management Systems (FMS), Autopilot, and the Electronic Flight Information System (EFIS).
